Established in 1860, Norris produced the world’s finest planes until the 1950s. Often dubbed the Rolls Royce of hand planes—a term popularized by Fine Woodworking Magazine in the 1980s—Norris planes were known for their exceptional quality. These planes were priced at four times the cost of a comparable Stanley.

Key features include:

  • Thicker Iron and Cap Iron: Provides stability and reduces chatter for a smoother cut.
  • Heavier Build: Ensures durability and longevity.
  • Iron Rests on Wood: Unlike other planes where iron rests on metal, this design further minimizes chatter.

In 1913, Norris patented his famous adjuster, offering micrometer-like, smooth blade adjustments. An improvement to this adjuster was patented in 1922, setting Norris apart from competitors—a design that remains influential today.

Pre-WWII vs. Post-WWII Norris Planes:

  • Pre-War Planes: Superior craftsmanship with Brazilian rosewood infill, dovetailed steel construction, and slightly thicker irons (3/16″) featuring larger Norris logos. The widths range from 13/16″ to 5/8″.
  • Earlier Planes (Circa 1928 and Earlier): Often found with finial lever cap screws and WARD irons. The 1928 Norris catalog lists both finial and flat top cap screws, along with Ward and Norris irons.

The two patented adjusters from 1913 and 1922 are helpful for accurate dating of these tools.
