Stephens & Co., based in Riverton, Connecticut, was a prominent manufacturer of folding rules during the 19th century. The company was originally established as D.H. Stephens & Company in 1861 and moved to Riverton in 1864. Known for their precision and craftsmanship, Stephens & Co. produced high-quality boxwood folding rules, which were widely used by carpenters and craftsmen of the era.
In 1901, Stephens & Co. merged with H. Chapin’s Son of Pine Meadow, Connecticut, forming the Chapin-Stephens Company. This new entity continued to manufacture rules and other tools until 1929, when the Stanley Rule and Level Company acquired their line of rules.
