Great Stanley No. 4 Smoothing Plane โ Type 2 with Solid Brass Adjusting Nut
A rare and desirable early example, this Stanley No. 4 smoothing plane is a confirmed Type 2, produced between 1874 and 1875, and carries all the hallmark features of that short-lived era. These early Baileys are prized for their transitional design and scarcity, making them a cornerstone for serious collectors.
This plane features the solid brass adjusting nut stamped with โBaileyโs Patentโ, a key identifier of Type 2 models. The solid-backed lever cap is marked โ4,โ and the cap iron bears Leonard Baileyโs patent stampโboth consistent with early production. The low beaded front knob and absence of lateral adjustment further confirm its vintage.
The tote has a tight crack, visible in the photos, but remains structurally sound and original. The body is clean, the sole true, and the overall condition is excellent for its age. Iron has the type J trademark.
Planes from this era were built before Stanley standardized many features, making each one a snapshot of evolving design. This is a superb opportunity to own a piece of toolmaking history.
