Description
A very rare William Dutton camโlock drawshave/plane, patented February 9, 1869, and measuring 12 1/2″ overallโone of the most unusual and mechanically distinctive 19thโcentury hybrid tools.
Duttonโs patented design combines the form of a small plane with the function of a drawshave, using his ingenious camโlock mechanism to secure the blade quickly and firmly without wedges or screws. Surviving examples are scarce, this one presents beautifully, with clean lines, crisp hardware, and the unmistakable early Bostonโmade character that sets Duttonโs work apart.
The proportions are excellent at 12 1/2″ long, giving it a compact but capable feel in the hands. Collectors of patented edge tools know how seldom these appear, especially in strong, honest condition.
A standout example of a truly rare patented tool from the inventive Boston period.
