A very rare Ashem Crafts rounding plane, made in England and sized at a 1/2-inch exit, a beautifully made chairmaker’s tool from one of the most respected modern British makers of traditional green‑woodworking planes.

Ashem Crafts produced these rounding planes in small batches, each one carefully shaped, tuned, and finished for smooth, controlled cutting of spindles, stretchers, legs, bows, and other cylindrical chair components. The 1/2-inch exit size is especially useful for finer chair parts and transitional tapers, giving excellent control while still removing material efficiently.

This example shows the classic Ashem form—clean beech body, precise throat, and the crisp workmanship that has made these tools so sought after. Single sizes are hard enough to find; complete and individual examples alike have become increasingly scarce since production ceased.
