Rare Andrew B. Lipsey, West Hoboken, New Jersey: “Lipsey’s Patent” Wrench

$199.99

SKU T16397. Categories , ,

Description

A rare and exceptionally clean Andrew B. Lipsey โ€œLipseyโ€™s Patentโ€ nut wrench, patented July 31, 1877, one of the most distinctive early American patented wrench designs. This example carries the desirable โ€œC.T. Co.โ€ marking .

At 6 inches long, it has that compact, elegant mechanical form associated with Lipseyโ€™s design. The condition is outstanding: crisp surfaces, strong markings, and none of the heavy wear typically seen on these early wrenches. As noted by Ken Cope, production is attributed to the Roper Caloric Engine Manufacturing Company of New York City, though additional makers may have supplied other markets, which helps explain the marking variations.

A scarce, wellโ€‘preserved, and highly collectible early patented wrenchโ€”an especially fine example of the nonโ€‘Lipseyโ€‘marked variant.
