Great Stanley No. 62 Twin Iron Reversible Spokeshave – Pat. 1876, Rare Early Model

Irons are both marked and would need to be honed for use.

A scarce and innovative example of the Stanley No. 62 reversible spokeshave, patented April 18, 1876 by Justus Traut and Henry Richards. This model features twin facing cutters—one for push cuts and one for pull cuts—mounted in a solid cast iron body measuring approximately 10″ long.

Manufactured between 1877 and 1923, the No. 62 was designed to handle changing grain direction on flat or convex surfaces without the need to reposition the tool—simply flip it and keep working. The handles are often found with the embossed patent date.

A rare and clever design that reflects Stanley’s most inventive era—perfect for collectors of early patented tools or users who appreciate 19th-century engineering.
