Extremely Rare Hardt Patent Split Frame Jointer Plane – August 8, 1893 – Patent No. 502,906 – 24″ Size
A truly extraordinary and extremely rare Hardt patent jointer plane, patented August 8, 1893 (U.S. Patent No. 502,906). This is the only example of a Hardt jointer plane I’m aware of, and it represents the holy grail for collectors of patented planes.
Measuring a massive 24″ in length, this jointer features Hardt’s ingenious split-frame design: the body moves vertically via an adjusting screw, allowing for fine control of the mouth opening. The lever cap is marked “Hardt” on the underside, confirming its authenticity and rarity.
Japanning is original and 95% intact—a remarkable survival rate for a plane of this age. The only apology is a few small chips in the mouth, which do not affect function or display.
Few known. Fewer still in this condition.
