Description
A great A. R. Robertson patent twoโpiece bill posterโs hammer, clearly marked Boston, Mass, and an outstanding example of one of the more unusual 19thโcentury advertising tools.
This patented device incorporates a springโloaded clip designed to hold handbills or advertising sheets securely. The user could place a bill in the clip, position it against a wall or building, and then drive the tack with the longโhandled hammer, whose upper section carries both the hammer face and the spring clip. The detachable twoโpiece handle made it easier to carry while still giving the reach needed for posting bills overhead or on large surfaces.
This example is clean, crisp, and well marked, showing the ingenuity of early American advertising tools and the clever mechanical solutions makers like Robertson brought to everyday commercial work.
A scarce and highly collectible specialty hammer with strong markings and great character.
