Description
Superb Stanley No. 278 Rabbet & Filletster Plane โ Complete with Proper Fence & Depth Stop
A fine and complete example of the Stanley No. 278 Rabbet & Filletster Plane, produced between 1915 and 1943, and designed for precision edge work, cross-grain cuts, and tight corner cleanups. This plane features the correct center-drilled fence and original depth stop, both of which are often missing on surviving examples. The 1″ cutter is seated bevel-up at a 20ยฐ bed angle, and the removable nose piece allows for easy conversion to bullnose work.
The No. 278 was Stanleyโs answer to a compact, multi-purpose rabbet and filletster plane, based on Christian Bodmerโs 1916 patent. It includes dual spurs for clean cross-grain work, a side-mounted fence rod that can be positioned on either side, and a lever cap with nickel-plated screw marked with the Sweetheart logo on later models.
Whether you’re a craftsman looking for a versatile user or a collector seeking a complete and correct example, this 278 is a standout.
