Superb Stephen Boone Miniature Luthierโs Thumb Plane โ Nicely Marked โข 2″ Overall Length
A superb Stephen Boone miniature luthierโs thumb plane, nicely marked and measuring just 2″ overall. Stephen Boone produced these planes roughly a decade ago, and they quickly became sought after by luthiers for their precision, thoughtful design, and exceptional cutting performance.
One of the standout features of Booneโs planes is the ability of the cutting edge to reach extremely close to the sidewalls, allowing work right up into tight inside corners โ perfect for shaping braces, refining contours, and performing delicate tasks where larger planes simply cannot reach. The plane has a tight mouth, ideal for fine, controlled, whisperโthin cuts.
Boone was a skilled maker in every sense: he built guitars and later violins, and his understanding of lutherie directly informed the design of these planes. His cutters were made from properly heatโtreated, highโquality tool steel, giving them excellent edge retention and a confident feel in use. These planes were produced in small batches, and clean examples have become increasingly hard to find.
