Early Oil Stone with Partial Scranton Label
Housed in Exceptional Carved Pinwheel Mahogany Box • 8″ × 2″ Stone
A wonderful early oil stone retaining a partial Scranton Whetstone & Abrasive Co. label, a scarce survivor that adds real historical charm. The stone measures 8″ × 2″ and shows a small corner chip—honest wear consistent with long, careful use.
It is housed in one of the finest carved pinwheel boxes you’ll encounter. The mahogany is richly colored, and the hand‑carved pinwheel lid gives the piece tremendous visual appeal. Boxes of this quality were often made by cabinetmakers for their own benches, and this example has that unmistakable early, shop‑made character.
A beautiful combination: an early labeled oil stone paired with a truly exceptional carved pinwheel box—perfect for display and highly desirable to collectors.
