Below is a little more history.
Pete Taran is a pivotal figure in the resurgence of premium hand saws. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded Independence Tool – aiming to recreate the quality and elegance of 19th-century English dovetail saws. Their flagship product—the Independence dovetail saw—was one of the first boutique saws to hit the market, setting a new standard for craftsmanship and performance.
Due to overwhelming demand and the challenges of small-scale production, Pete eventually sold Independence Tool to Lie-Nielsen Toolworks in 1998. Lie-Nielsen continued producing the saws, retaining the original design and tooth geometry, and even kept the Independence name on the spine for a time. Today’s Lie-Nielsen dovetail saws are direct descendants of Pete’s original design.
Pete didn’t disappear from the scene—he went on to found VintageSaws.com, where he sells restored saws and shares expert advice on saw sharpening and filing. More recently, he returned to sawmaking under the Elysium Saw Works banner, offering ultra-premium models like the Ne Plus Ultra dovetail saw.
If you’re holding an Elysium saw, you’ve got a piece of sawmaking history in your hands.
