Description
A rare and very early example of SMITHโS PATENT CLAPBOARD GAUGE, produced by George Smith of Omaha, Nebraska, made fully in accordance with Pedrickโs U.S. Patent of November 30, 1869. This one is properly marked, with the clear maker attribution that sets the true Smithโmade versions apart from later interpretations.
Itโs a fascinating postโCivilโWar siding tool, combining the inventive mechanics of Pedrickโs patent with the distinctive Midwestern manufacture of George Smith. Surviving examples are few, and properly marked ones like this are genuinely scarce in the wild.
A standout, early patented gauge with excellent historical appeal.
