Great Complex Molding Plane by Mutter โ Pre-1780, Wide Flat Chamfers
A fine and early 18th-century complex molding plane marked Mutter, this example dates to before 1780 and reflects the craftsmanship of early British planemakers. Measuring 1โฏ11/16″ wide and 9โฏ1/2″ long, it features the classic wide flat chamfers associated with pre-1800 English planes. The molding profile is crisp and deeply cut, with a well-fitted wedge and a clean, substantial iron.
The makerโs mark โMutterโ is attributed to George Mutter of London, listed in W.L. Goodmanโs British Planemakers from 1700 as active circa 1766โ1799. Based on its form and detailing, this example likely represents his earlier work. A superb piece for collectors of early molding planes or students of 18th-century toolmaking traditions.
