Great Complex Molding Plane by Mutter – Pre-1780, Wide Flat Chamfers

A fine and early 18th-century complex molding plane marked Mutter, this example dates to before 1780 and reflects the craftsmanship of early British planemakers. Measuring 1 11/16″ wide and 9 1/2″ long, it features the classic wide flat chamfers associated with pre-1800 English planes. The molding profile is crisp and deeply cut, with a well-fitted wedge and a clean, substantial iron.

The maker’s mark “Mutter” is attributed to George Mutter of London, listed in W.L. Goodman’s British Planemakers from 1700 as active circa 1766–1799. Based on its form and detailing, this example likely represents his earlier work. A superb piece for collectors of early molding planes or students of 18th-century toolmaking traditions.
