Great Rare Munks Patented No. 2 Size Smoothing Plane โ Patented 1884
See PTAMPIA II, Fig. 257 โข 6โ5/8″ Long โข CastโIron Tote โข 1โ7/8″ Unmarked Cutter Held by Brass Wingnut
A great and very rare Munks Patented No. 2 size smoothing plane, fully consistent with the example illustrated in PTAMPIA II, Figure 257. This compact patented smoother measures 6โ5/8″ long, making it one of the smallest and most distinctive patented planes of the 1880s.
This example features the classic castโiron tote, a hallmark of the Munks design, giving the plane a unique profile and unmistakable presence. It retains its proper 1โ7/8″ unmarked cutter, secured by the correct brass wingnut, exactly as shown in the PTAMPIA reference. The body shows strong early surfaces, crisp lines, and that inventive patented form that sets Munks apart from other small smoothers of the era.
A scarce and desirable patented planeโcompact, early, and absolutely collectorโgrade.
