The Ames Patent Square is a fascinating piece of history in precision tools. It was patented on July 6, 1852, by Nathan Ames of Saugus, Massachusetts. Initially, it wasn’t manufactured until it appeared in Scientific American in 1855. Later, Joseph R. Brown, the founder of Brown & Sharpe, took over its production.
Brown & Sharpe, a renowned name in precision tools, evolved over time. Joseph R. Brown partnered with Lucian Sharpe in 1853, and in 1866, Samuel Darling joined them, forming Darling, Brown & Sharpe. This partnership focused on creating precision tools, while the machinery line was reorganized under Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Co. in 1868.
The Ames Patent Square, especially the smaller 4-inch version, is considered rare and valuable among collectors. It is marked with ” D B & Sย  Prov RI.
